A big barrier to making changes in our lives can be a safe and reliable comfort zone.
And, while our comfort zone can provide a sense of stability and predictability, it can also prevent us from growing and experiencing new opportunities. It can be daunting at first, but taking small steps towards trying new things can gradually expand our comfort zone and lead to exciting possibilities.
Having reliable or predictable routines helps reduce anxiety and stop stress levels overwhelming us. But those same patterns can also become dull or, worse, they can lead to a feeling of being stuck in a rut.
For you, variety and new experiences could be as simple as trying out a new hobby, exploring your local area, or meeting new people. Whether it's active, creative or self-care, the challenge is to move the comfort dial... a little:
- a walk/ run/ swim 30 mins
- to write or read a page a day
- sleep an extra hour
- cook a new recipe each week
A commitment to a challenge helps us grow stronger, both physically and mentally; start with a defined goal to complete in a set amount of time, rather than 'I will do it sometime this week/month/year'. How many times has that happened?
By stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing change, we can revitalise our daily lives and keep things interesting. Embracing spontaneity and seeking out novel experiences can help us stay engaged, inspired, and open to all the possibilities life has to offer.
When we set and complete a challenge, we experience a sense of accomplishment - a feeling of achievement that can boost our confidence and self-esteem. You might discover strengths or capabilities you never knew existed.
Remember, growth begins at the end of your comfort zone!
